Pediatric Biliary Atresia MDT

The Pediatric Biliary Atresia MDT Clinic is a multidisciplinary outpatient service established by Sichuan University Hospital, specifically designed to address biliary atresia in children, end-stage liver disease (including pediatric primary liver tumors and decompensated cirrhosis caused by various etiologies), as well as liver-related genetic metabolic disorders. These pediatric conditions are among the most common diseases that severely impair liver function, hinder healthy development, and even threaten children’s lives—yet they are not rare in the pediatric population. If these conditions aren’t diagnosed and treated promptly in their early stages, children often miss the critical window for effective intervention. Meanwhile, pediatric liver transplantation remains the most effective treatment option for children with these advanced-stage conditions. However, this procedure is highly complex and carries significant risks, requiring meticulous preoperative evaluation, expert postoperative management, and seamless collaboration across multiple disciplines and specialties. To meet these challenges, our hospital’s Multidisciplinary Pediatric Biliary Atresia Clinic brings together specialists from departments such as Pediatric Surgery, Hepatic Surgery, the Organ Transplantation Center, and Ultrasound, ensuring that each child receives a more standardized and personalized treatment plan tailored to their unique needs.

3. Patient Visit Procedure

1. Patients can request a consultation at the consultation center, or they may be referred by a relevant specialist based on their medical condition. Staff at the consultation center will verify and organize the patient’s medical records, then inform the patient of the specific time and location for their outpatient appointment.

2. Patients can also book appointments for the multidisciplinary joint clinic by visiting the hospital’s official website (www.CD120.com), using the Huayitong mobile app, or accessing the official WeChat public account of Sichuan University Hospital. Staff will review the patient’s information; those who meet the eligibility criteria for the scheduled MDT will proceed to their MDT consultation, while patients who do not qualify for the consultation will be guided through the refund process by our staff.

3. The MDT team contact person is responsible for reviewing the patient’s medical history, gathering and organizing relevant information, and presenting the case to outpatient specialists. After a multidisciplinary team discussion, treatment decisions are made, and the patient and family are informed of the diagnosis and treatment plan.
