Ultrasound Medicine Department

Department Overview

Ultrasound medicine began to develop in 1961, making this institution one of the earliest in China to engage in both clinical ultrasound applications and research. In 1986, it became an independent department. Under the leadership of Professor Huang Chengxiao, the former honorary director, and currently Professor Luo Yan, the department has grown into a comprehensive unit offering a full range of subspecialties, seamlessly integrating ultrasound diagnosis with therapeutic interventions. Today, the department boasts a well-rounded structure that excels equally in medical education, research, and clinical practice. Its specialties include abdominal ultrasound (covering digestive and urinary systems), cardiovascular ultrasound, obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound, pediatric ultrasound, interventional ultrasound, as well as superficial and musculoskeletal ultrasound—and even point-of-care (POC) ultrasound for emergency, anesthesia, and critical care settings. The Ultrasound Department at West China Hospital of Sichuan University is recognized as one of the first key disciplines designated by the Ministry of Education (in 2007, under Imaging Medicine and Nuclear Medicine) and has also been honored as a National Clinical Key Specialty by the National Health and Family Planning Commission (in 2013, again in the field of Imaging Medicine and Nuclear Medicine).
