At 4 p.m. on International Nurses Day, May 12, the International Committee of the Red Cross announced the winners of the 49th Florence Nightingale Medal for 2023. Zhao Xuehong, Deputy Director of the Nursing Department at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, was awarded the prestigious 2023 Nightingale Medal. This marks the first time a nursing professional from Zhejiang Province has received the honor in 14 years, and Zhao Xuehong also becomes the first nurse from Zhejiang University to ever earn this distinguished award.
The Nightingale Medal is an acknowledgment of nurses who demonstrate "extraordinary courage and dedication in caring for the sick, injured, disabled, or victims of war and disasters," or who have "excellently pioneered or set exemplary standards in public health or nursing education." It stands as the highest honor recognizing individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the nursing profession, awarded every two years. This year, 37 nurses from 22 countries were honored with this prestigious award.
