Development Journey
The St. Hugh Hospital Era (1990–2000)
1990
At the end of 1919, French physician Albert Gervais was dispatched to Sichuan, China, by the then-Diplomatic Mission Department. There, he served as the medical director of the local French Catholic Church hospital and also taught at the jointly established Chengdu Royal Military Medical College, run by the French and Chinese governments. Dr. Gervais developed a deep passion for China. After leaving Sichuan for France in 1925, he drew upon his experiences working and living in China to publish five books about the country: "Flowers of Emotion," "The Shadow of Magu," "The God of Medicine in China," "The God of Medicine in China Amidst Rebellion," and "A Doctor in China." Through his writings, Dr. Gervais played a vital role in promoting Chinese culture, earning him the title of an ambassador for cultural exchange between China and France. In November 2015, Aurore Staiger, a freelance writer from France, visited the hospital to trace her great-grandfather Albert Gervais’s footsteps at St. Xue Hospital.
